Rejected Hurricane Claims

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita combined to become one of the costliest disasters in the history of the United States. These two storms decimated coastal towns and cities, destroyed the lives of millions of people, and virtually brought our nation to its knees. The catastrophic damage caused by the two storms that battered the Gulf coast has been estimated at billions of dollars - making the one-two punch one of the most expensive natural disasters in the country's history.

In fact, Hurricane Katrina proved to be one of the deadliest and most costly natural disasters to ever hit American soil - leaving hundreds of thousands of homeowners homeless in an instant. Many erroneously held on to the hope that their insurance would provide a way to rebuild and start anew.

A great many of the homes decimated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita were ruined by deep water flooding that caused profound and irreversable structural damage. While reasonable people would assume that hurricane-induced flooding is part and parcel for insurance coverage, insurers rejected thousands of claims, insisting that the damage was caused by flooding, which isn't covered in regular policies.

Also, there were emerging stories claiming that many carriers were attempting to lie or bribe their customers into signing waivers that claimed their house was destroyed by flooding and not the hurricane. In some cases, the homes that insurance carriers were trying to claim were destroyed by water were first obviously destroyed by wind.

As the rest of the country learns to appreciate the scale of the human and economic costs of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita, those companies and individuals despicable enough to take advantage of the victims of this disaster have been subject to public derision and scorn.  Unfortunately, the people who must confront the reality of rebuilding their lives without the support owed to them face an uphill battle fraught with unimaginable difficulties and hardship.  Fortunately, there is way for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita to take back their lives and get on their feet again.
